Ahmir K. Thompson, professionally known as Questlove, is a multifaceted American musician, widely celebrated as the drummer and joint frontman of the legendary hip-hop band The Roots. Born on January 20, 1971, Questlove has been instrumental in shaping the sound of modern soul, R&B, and hip-hop, both through his work with The Roots—who have served as the in-house band for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon since 2014—and through his prolific work as a producer and collaborator. Beyond the stage, he co-founded the influential platforms Okayplayer and OkayAfrica, has served as an adjunct professor at NYU’s Clive Davis Institute, and hosts the music-focused podcast Questlove Supreme.
Renowned for his encyclopedic knowledge of music and genre-blending style, Questlove has produced or collaborated with a wide range of acclaimed artists, from D’Angelo and Erykah Badu to Jay-Z and John Legend. He played a role in the Grammy-winning cast recording of Hamilton and has contributed to several supergroups including the Soulquarians. In addition to his musical work, Questlove is an accomplished author with eight published books and a decorated filmmaker, having won an Academy Award and a BAFTA for his directorial debut, Summer of Soul.
