Matt Shakman is an American director and former child actor best known for his work across both television and theatre. He gained widespread acclaim for producing and directing Marvel’s WandaVision, a groundbreaking miniseries that blended classic sitcom tropes with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Shakman has also directed episodes of several high-profile television series, including The Great, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Fargo, and Game of Thrones, showcasing his versatility across genres. He is set to direct the highly anticipated Marvel film The Fantastic Four: First Steps, marking his return to the superhero realm.
Born and raised in Ventura, California, Shakman grew up in a household shaped by his Jewish father and Catholic mother. Their interfaith marriage created tension within his extended family, particularly with his paternal grandmother. Despite the household’s relatively secular nature, the cultural dynamics left a lasting impression on Shakman. He began his career in the entertainment industry as a child actor, appearing in commercials and securing a regular role on the TV sitcom Just the Ten of Us. After several years of acting, he decided to step away from the screen and focus on his education, enrolling at The Thacher School in Ojai, California.
Shakman later attended Yale University, where he pursued a double major in art history and theater. During his time at Yale, he became deeply involved in the university’s theater scene and joined the prestigious secret society Skull and Bones. It was at Yale that his passion for directing blossomed, as he directed numerous stage productions and began to shape his creative vision. These formative experiences helped lay the groundwork for his future success in both stage and screen directing.
From 2017 to 2023, Shakman served as the artistic director of the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles. In this role, he brought a wide range of innovative and diverse theatrical productions to the stage, further cementing his reputation as a dynamic force in the performing arts. His background in both theater and television continues to inform his distinct directorial style, making him one of the most sought-after directors in the industry today.
