Lorcan Finnegan is a prominent Irish filmmaker, celebrated for his visually striking and psychologically intense storytelling. He gained international recognition with Vivarium (2019), a surreal sci-fi thriller starring Imogen Poots and Jesse Eisenberg, which earned the Cannes Film Festival’s Gan Foundation Support for Distribution award. Known for blending genre elements with philosophical undertones, Finnegan’s work explores themes of identity, nature, and societal constraint through atmospheric visuals and compelling narratives.
Finnegan’s creative journey began with a Master’s degree in Graphic Design in Dublin, which sharpened his eye for composition and visual storytelling. He then moved to London to work with Charlie Brooker’s production company Zeppotron—home of Black Mirror—where he served as a designer, editor, and director. This experience shaped his sensibilities toward thought-provoking, high-concept content and refined his skills in both aesthetics and pacing.
In 2004, Finnegan returned to Dublin and launched his own company, Lovely Productions. He began directing commercials, music videos, and short films, eventually making his feature debut with Without Name (2016), a slow-burn psychological thriller that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. With a growing body of work marked by eerie atmospheres and existential depth, Finnegan continues to push the boundaries of genre cinema.
