Joshua O’Connor (born 20 May 1990) is a British actor known for his emotionally nuanced performances across television and film. A graduate of the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, he began his career with supporting roles in Doctor Who (2013) and Peaky Blinders (2014), gaining wider recognition as Larry Durrell in ITV’s The Durrells (2016–2019).
His breakout film role came in God’s Own Country (2017), where his portrayal of a repressed Yorkshire farmer earned him a British Independent Film Award (BIFA). O’Connor reached international acclaim for his role as Prince Charles in The Crown (2019–2020), winning both a Primetime Emmy and a Golden Globe Award in 2021.
O’Connor has continued to build a diverse filmography with notable performances in Emma (2020), Alice Rohrwacher’s La chimera (2023), and Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers (2024), a romantic sports drama.
He was born in Newbury, Berkshire, and raised in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Coming from a creative family, his grandfather was sculptor John Bunting, and his maternal aunt is writer Madeleine Bunting. His heritage includes Irish, English, Scottish, and Jewish (Ashkenazi and Sephardi) roots.
