Lawson was born and raised in Brisbane, Australia, where he attended St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace. He pursued formal acting education at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), graduating in 2001. To further hone his craft, he spent a year studying improvisation in Los Angeles, training at renowned institutions like The Second City, The Groundlings, ACME Comedy Theatre, and I.O. West. His dedication to his craft earned him the prestigious Mike Walsh Fellowship in 2003.
