John Keating, born in 1956 or 1957, is a retired American sportscaster who became a beloved figure in Michigan sports media over a distinguished 45-year career. Raised in Madison Heights, Michigan, Keating began his broadcasting journey at Grand Valley State University, where he rapidly rose through the ranks of WSRX, the campus radio station. He then transitioned to professional radio at WZZR in Grand Rapids, adopting the on-air name “Steve Knight” due to naming conflicts. This led to a television career at WZZM-TV, where he became a popular sports personality before moving to KMGH in Denver, Colorado. After a decade out west, Keating returned to Michigan, first with PASS Sports and later as a central voice on Fox Sports Detroit (now Bally Sports Detroit).
Throughout his career, Keating became best known for hosting pregame and postgame coverage for the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Red Wings, endearing himself to fans with his deep knowledge and affable delivery. In addition to his studio work, he occasionally stepped into the broadcast booth, including a brief stint as a color analyst for the Detroit Tigers Radio Network in 2009. His excellence in broadcasting earned him numerous accolades, including 16 local Emmy Awards. On April 17, 2025, Keating retired following the Red Wings’ final game of the season, marking the end of a storied and influential presence in Michigan sports broadcasting.
