Heather Hach is an American screenwriter, librettist, and novelist known for her work across film, theater, and literature. She graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder School of Journalism and initially worked as a research assistant for The New York Times’ Denver bureau before moving into magazine editing at Sports and Fitness Publishing. Her transition into screenwriting began when she received the prestigious Walt Disney Screenwriting Fellowship in 1999, setting the stage for her future in Hollywood.
Hach gained widespread recognition for co-writing the screenplay for the 2003 remake of Freaky Friday alongside Leslie Dixon, a project that earned the duo a Saturn Award nomination for Best Screenplay. She further expanded her creative reach by writing the libretto for the hit 2007 Broadway musical Legally Blonde, adapted from Amanda Brown’s novel and the popular 2001 film. Her work on Legally Blonde earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Book of a Musical and a Drama Desk Award nomination, and the musical itself went on to win the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical. Hach also appeared as a judge on MTV’s Legally Blonde: The Musical – The Search for Elle Woods, a reality competition designed to find the show’s next Broadway star.
In addition to her success in screenwriting and theater, Hach has authored works of fiction. She co-wrote the novel Freaky Monday with Mary Rodgers, released by HarperCollins in 2009. She continued her screenwriting career by adapting the bestselling pregnancy guide into the ensemble comedy film What to Expect When You’re Expecting. Hach’s diverse body of work showcases her versatility and enduring influence across multiple storytelling mediums.
