Griffin Matthews is an American actor, writer, and director, born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, around 1981 or 1982. He pursued his passion for the performing arts by earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in musical theater from Carnegie Mellon University. With a strong foundation in theater, Matthews has built a multifaceted career in stage and screen, known for his versatility and activism.
One of Matthews’ most notable accomplishments is co-writing the musical Witness Uganda, later retitled Invisible Thread, with his husband, composer Matt Gould. Inspired by Matthews’ own volunteer work in Uganda, the musical explores themes of identity, service, and cultural conflict. It received critical acclaim and won the prestigious Richard Rodgers Award for Musical Theatre in both 2012 and 2014, helping to establish Matthews as a powerful voice in contemporary musical theater.
