Griffin Dunne (born June 8, 1955) is an American actor, director, and producer. He gained widespread recognition for his roles in An American Werewolf in London (1981) and After Hours (1985), the latter earning him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
Born in New York City and raised in Los Angeles, Dunne is the son of journalist and producer Dominick Dunne and the nephew of writers John Gregory Dunne and Joan Didion. His early exposure to the arts shaped his path toward acting. He studied at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre under the renowned Sanford Meisner after being expelled from boarding school—a turning point that redirected him to pursue acting full-time in New York.
Dunne has built a diverse career across film and television, both in front of and behind the camera, known for his ability to portray complex, offbeat characters and for his work as a director on films and television series.
