Ezhilmaaran S., popularly known as Ezhil, is an Indian film director who works in the Tamil film industry. He made his directorial debut with the romantic drama Thullatha Manamum Thullum (1999), starring Vijay and Simran, which became a blockbuster hit. Following this success, Ezhil directed a series of successful films such as Pennin Manathai Thottu (2000), Poovellam Un Vasam (2001), and Deepavali (2007), establishing himself as a notable filmmaker in the industry. He has received two Tamil Nadu State Film Awards for his contributions to Tamil cinema. Notably, popular directors Suseenthiran and Karu Pazhaniappan began their careers as his assistants.
After a brief hiatus, Ezhil made a comeback with Manam Kothi Paravai (2012), which, despite receiving moderate critical reviews, was a commercial success. His early films often revolved around themes of love, family, and emotional drama, resonating with mainstream audiences. An interesting fact from his debut film is that comedian Vadivelu was initially considered for the lead role, but eventually, Vijay was cast, contributing to the film’s massive success. Ezhil’s films have been known for their simple storytelling, feel-good themes, and memorable music, earning him a lasting place in Tamil cinema.
