Erica McDermott is an American actress best recognized for her portrayal of Cindy “Tar” Eklund, the tough and outspoken sister of Mark Wahlberg’s character in The Fighter (2010), directed by David O. Russell. Though she began acting later in life, McDermott quickly made her mark in Hollywood, going on to appear in other Russell films such as American Hustle (2013) and Joy (2015). She also played the wife of Benedict Cumberbatch’s character in the crime drama Black Mass (2015), further establishing her presence in high-profile productions.
Born on April 26, 1973, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, McDermott showed an early interest in acting by participating in school plays. However, her initial path led her into healthcare, training and working as a registered nurse while raising her family. Her passion for acting reemerged in 2008 when she joined a local production of The MOMologues for a school fundraiser. Encouraged by the experience, she pursued acting more seriously, enrolling in classes and performing in Boston-area stage productions.
McDermott’s professional screen debut came in the short film Mama Raised a Hellraiser (2010). Shortly after, at age 36, she landed a major breakthrough role in The Fighter, which opened the door to subsequent film roles. Known for her strong screen presence and ability to bring authenticity to her characters, McDermott has carved out a successful second career in acting, earning respect for her talent and determination.
