Elizabeth McGovern is an American actress and musician born on July 18, 1961, in Evanston, Illinois. She rose to prominence with her Academy Award-nominated performance as Evelyn Nesbit in Ragtime (1981) and has since enjoyed a diverse career spanning film, television, and music. Her early film credits include Ordinary People (1980), Once Upon a Time in America (1984), She’s Having a Baby (1987), and The Handmaid’s Tale (1990).
She gained global recognition for her role as Cora Crawley, Countess of Grantham, in the acclaimed British series Downton Abbey (2010–2015), earning Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. She reprised the role in the feature films Downton Abbey (2019) and Downton Abbey: A New Era (2022). In addition to acting, McGovern is the lead singer and songwriter of the folk-rock band Sadie and the Hotheads, showcasing her talent as a musician with several album releases.
