Daniel Annie Pope is an Indian actor known for his comic timing and distinctive screen presence in Tamil-language cinema. After years of appearing in uncredited and minor roles, he rose to fame through his breakout role as Romba Sumar Moonji Kumaru in the 2013 comedy Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumara, alongside Vijay Sethupathi. A graduate in Visual Communications from Loyola College, Chennai, Daniel was actively involved in theatre and mime, contributing significantly to stage performances during his college years. He achieved a Guinness World Record in 2007 for the longest continuous theatre play, performing for 72 hours, and was later recognized as the Best Mimer in South India in 2008.
Before finding success in films, Daniel worked behind the scenes in the television industry, serving as a creative program producer for channels like Vasanth TV, Vijay TV, NDTV Hindu, UFX, and Thanthi TV. He initially appeared in small roles in films such as Polladhavan (2007), Paiyaa (2010), and Rowthiram (2011), but failed to gain recognition at that time. He was considered for a role in Vetrimaaran’s shelved project Venghai Saamy before his breakthrough came with director Gokul’s Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumara, which showcased his knack for comedy and helped establish him in the industry.
Following his breakthrough, Daniel took on a variety of supporting roles in films such as Massu Engira Masilamani (2015), Rangoon (2017), Maragadha Naanayam (2017), and Oru Nalla Naal Paathu Solren (2018). He also began exploring other aspects of filmmaking, revealing plans to direct a film titled Kuthirai Muttai, inspired by Tamil folklore. Though he briefly worked on a lead role in the unreleased film Indha Moonji OK Va, Daniel continues to be recognized for his comedic talent and versatility, maintaining a steady presence in Tamil cinema.
