Chieko Baisho (倍賞 千恵子) is a Japanese actress and singer, Her also known as Baishō Chieko, She was born on 29th June 1941 in Kita, Tokyo, Japan. Chieko Baisho rose to national prominence for her iconic role as Sakura in the long-running Otoko wa Tsurai yo film series, appearing from 1969 until 1995. Her heartfelt portrayal of the gentle, steadfast sister of the wandering Tora-san made her a household name and a symbol of warmth and compassion in Japanese cinema.
Throughout her illustrious career, Chieko Baisho has frequently collaborated with acclaimed director Yamada Yoji, starring in many of his films since the 1960s. Her remarkable performance in A Distant Cry from Spring (1980) earned her the Best Actress Award at the 5th Hochi Film Awards, solidifying her status as one of Japan’s finest actresses.
In addition to her work on screen, Chieko Baisho is also known for her voice acting. She notably voiced “Sophie” in Studio Ghibli’s Howl’s Moving Castle (2004), skillfully portraying both the young and old versions of the character—an achievement that demonstrated her extraordinary vocal range and emotional sensitivity. She also performed the film’s theme song, showcasing her enduring musical talent.

Chieko Baisho began her singing career in 1962 with her debut single Shitamachi no Taiyo, which earned her the Newcomer Award at the Japan Record Awards. Her 1965 hit Sayonara wa Dance Atoni, a cha-cha-inspired ballad, later influenced Moonlight Densetsu, the theme song for the anime Sailor Moon.
Chieko is the elder sister of actress Mitsuko Baisho and is married to renowned Japanese composer Reijiro Koroku. With her grace, versatility, and timeless artistry, she remains a cherished icon of Japanese culture.
