Azhagam Perumal is an Indian film director and actor known for his work in the Tamil film industry. He hails from Kulasekharapuram, a village in Kanyakumari District, Tamil Nadu. Coming from a family of government employees, Azhagam faced strong opposition when he chose a career in cinema over engineering. Determined to follow his passion, he graduated with a Gold Medal from the Adyar Film Institute in 1991, marking the beginning of his journey in the film world.
He started his career working as an assistant director to Mani Ratnam, contributing to acclaimed films like Thalapathi and Iruvar. During the making of Alaipayuthey, Mani Ratnam needed an actor to play a quirky house owner, a role that marked Azhagam Perumal’s acting debut. Although he planned to debut as a director with Mudhal Mudhalaaga in 1998, the project was shelved. His subsequent venture Udhaya, starring Vijay and Simran, also faced significant production delays. Despite these setbacks, Azhagam remained persistent, even exploring other projects like Hijack, which unfortunately did not materialize.
Azhagam Perumal eventually made his directorial debut with the romantic comedy Dumm Dumm Dumm (2001), starring R. Madhavan and Jyothika, with Mani Ratnam as the producer and screenwriter. The film was a success and established him as a director. While he initially declined acting offers to focus on completing Udhaya, he later gained recognition for his supporting roles in films like Pudhupettai (2006), 7aum Arivu (2011), and Naanum Rowdydhaan (2016). He continues to appear in notable supporting roles, including in Jayam Ravi’s films like Adanga Maru (2019), Iraivan (2023), and Siren (2024), balancing his contributions as both an actor and director in Tamil cinema.
