Alok Nath, born on 10 July 1956 in Khagaria, Bihar, is an Indian former actor renowned for his work in Hindi cinema and television. He made his film debut with the Oscar-winning movie Gandhi (1982), directed by Sir Richard Attenborough. His role in the iconic TV series Buniyaad (1986) brought him widespread recognition. Over the years, he became a household name with notable appearances in popular television serials such as Rishtey (1999–2001), Sapna Babul Ka…Bidaai, Yahaaan Main Ghar Ghar Kheli, and Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai. He earned the nickname “Sanskaari Babuji” for his portrayal of traditional and virtuous father figures in Indian entertainment.
In 2013, Alok Nath became an unexpected internet sensation when jokes and memes based on his on-screen persona went viral on social media. The phenomenon, dubbed “The Curious Case of Alok Nath,” sparked widespread curiosity and became the subject of various case studies and articles. Nath responded to this trend with humor, stating that he enjoyed many of the jokes that circulated online, further endearing himself to the public.
However, his career faced significant controversy during the Indian Me Too movement in 2018, when he was accused of rape by writer-producer Vinta Nanda and of sexual misconduct by several other women. The Mumbai Police filed rape charges against him, which severely impacted his public image. Despite these allegations, Alok Nath’s contribution to Indian cinema and television as a veteran actor remains a significant chapter in the industry’s history.
