Alex Eugene Newell (born August 20, 1992) is an American actor and singer celebrated for their powerhouse vocals and dynamic presence on both screen and stage. They first rose to fame for their breakout role as Unique Adams on the Fox musical comedy-drama Glee, becoming the show’s first transgender character and a fan favorite. Newell later captivated audiences as Mo, the genderfluid neighbor and confidant in the NBC musical series Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, further showcasing their range and charisma.
In the theater world, Newell made a splash on Broadway with their portrayal of the goddess Asaka in the 2018 revival of Once on This Island, earning widespread praise for their vibrant performance. Their star soared even higher with the role of Lulu in the original Broadway production of Shucked, for which they won the 2023 Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical. This win was historic, as both Newell and fellow nominee J. Harrison Ghee became the first openly non-binary performers to be nominated for and win a Tony Award.
Beyond acting, Newell has pursued a successful music career. Known for their soaring vocals and bold style, they have collaborated with electronic music acts such as Clean Bandit, Blonde, and The Knocks. Their voice—fierce, soulful, and unmistakable—has become a signature in dance and pop tracks, blending Broadway flair with club-ready energy.
Newell’s impact reaches beyond performance; they are a trailblazer for non-binary visibility in mainstream entertainment, breaking boundaries and redefining representation in theater, television, and music. With each new project, Newell continues to dazzle audiences while paving the way for a more inclusive and expressive artistic world.
