Alana Mychal Haim, born on December 15, 1991, is an American musician and actress best known as a member of the pop rock band Haim. She performs vocals, piano, and guitar alongside her two older sisters, Este and Danielle. The band gained significant recognition with their third album, Women in Music Pt. Alana’s acting career took off in 2021 when she starred in Paul Thomas Anderson’s critically acclaimed comedy-drama Licorice Pizza. Her performance in the film earned her nominations for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical and a BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Alana comes from a musical Jewish family. Her father, Mordechai “Moti” Haim, is an Israeli-born retired professional soccer player, and her mother, Donna Rose, is a former elementary school art teacher. Alana has two older sisters, Este and Danielle, both of whom are also members of Haim. The Haim family was deeply musical: Alana’s father was a drummer, and her mother was a folk singer who won on The Gong Show in the 1970s. From a young age, Alana and her sisters were encouraged to play various instruments, with Alana beginning percussion at age four. The family even formed their own band, Rockinhaim, and performed together at local events, laying the foundation for Alana’s career in music.
