ISLAMABAD: The federal government has officially declared a three-day public holiday for Eid ul-Fitr, allowing citizens across the country to celebrate the joyous occasion with their families. According to a notification issued by the Cabinet Division, the holidays will commence on Monday, March 31, and extend until Wednesday, April 2, 2025.
As the holy month of Ramadan nears its end, the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will convene on Sunday, March 30, 2025 (Ramazan 29, 1446 AH), to observe the Shawwal moon. This crucial meeting will determine whether Ramadan will conclude after 29 days or continue for 30 days, ultimately setting the date for Eid ul-Fitr celebrations across Pakistan.
The Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony will host the moon-sighting session, where religious scholars, meteorologists, and astronomy experts will analyze testimonies and scientific data from different regions. Regional and zonal committees will also meet in their respective areas to gather observations, ensuring a coordinated decision on the sighting of the new moon.
In addition to traditional moon-sighting methods, Pakistan’s Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) has provided astronomical predictions, indicating that the Shawwal crescent is expected to be visible on the evening of March 30. If confirmed, Eid ul-Fitr will be celebrated on March 31, 2025. However, the official announcement will rely on verified visual testimonies, as per Islamic traditions.
The sighting of the new moon marks not only the end of Ramadan but also the beginning of one of the most significant religious festivals in Islam. Eid ul-Fitr is celebrated with special prayers, family gatherings, and acts of charity, emphasizing gratitude and togetherness. Mosques across the country, including historic landmarks like Lahore’s Badshahi Mosque and Karachi’s Grand Mosque, are expected to host thousands of worshippers for Eid prayers.
As the nation prepares for the festivities, authorities have urged the public to follow safety guidelines and maintain the spirit of unity and compassion during the celebrations.
