CM Punjab Launches Free University Education Program for Workers' Children

LAHORE – In a major step to support working-class families, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has launched a free education program for the children of industrial and mine workers. This initiative aims to provide bright students from low-income backgrounds with the opportunity to study in top universities without worrying about the cost of education.

Under the Workers’ Children Free Education Program, eligible students will be able to get admission in seven different campuses of COMSATS University, one of the leading universities in Pakistan. The entire cost of their education—including tuition fees, hostel expenses, and other academic charges—will be covered by the Punjab government. This means that the students will not have to pay anything out of their pockets.

The program is open to children of registered industrial and mine workers in Punjab. It also includes children whose parents are either disabled or have passed away. This makes the initiative even more inclusive, helping families who are facing difficult circumstances.

Students can apply through the official admissions portal of COMSATS University. While applying, they need to upload certain documents, such as:

  • CNIC (Computerized National Identity Card) of the worker,
  • Worker’s registration certificate,
  • CNIC or B-form of the student,
  • Proof of enrollment in social security or EOBI (Employees’ Old-Age Benefits Institution).

The last dates to apply vary by campus:

  • Islamabad campus: July 9
  • Lahore campus: July 17
  • Wah Cantt and Abbottabad campuses: August 4
  • Vehari and Attock campuses: August 11
  • Sahiwal campus: August 15

Students are encouraged to apply early so they don’t miss the deadlines.

While talking about the program, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif emphasized the government’s strong commitment to providing education to every child in Punjab, regardless of their financial situation. She stated:

“Workers are the pride of our province. We are opening the gates of the best educational institutions for their children. No child in Punjab should be deprived of education.”

This bold initiative shows the Punjab government’s serious efforts to support working-class families and create a better future for their children. By offering access to free quality education, the government is helping reduce the financial burden on poor families and opening new opportunities for the youth of Punjab.

In another significant move, the Punjab government has also introduced a modern branchless banking system for salary payments in the Forest Department, ending the outdated method of cash payments. This system will ensure transparency, quick payments, and eliminate corruption. This reform was also launched under the directives of CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif, highlighting her focus on modernizing governance.
