Arizona State University and Pakistan Partner to Launch First U.S. University Campus in Lahore

In a groundbreaking step for higher education in Pakistan, Arizona State University (ASU), one of the top public universities in the United States, has officially partnered with Pakistan to launch the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Lahore. This marks the first-ever physical campus of a U.S. university in the country, making it a historic development for students and educators alike.

Classes Starting in Fall 2025

The National Institute of Technology is expected to start its academic operations in Fall 2025. It will offer degree programs through two major academic divisions:

  • The School of Management Sciences
  • The School of Data Sciences and Information Technology

These schools will offer high-quality education based on American academic standards while being carefully adapted to fit Pakistan’s cultural values and educational needs. The aim is to provide students with a world-class learning experience without having to leave the country.

Key People Behind the Initiative

This unique collaboration has been made possible through the leadership of two prominent professionals:

  • Shahzeb Awan, a lawyer trained at the University of London
  • Jahanzeb Burana, a finance expert who studied at Harvard University

The formal agreement between ASU and the Pakistani stakeholders was signed in April 2025 at Arizona State University’s main campus located in Tempe, Arizona, USA.

A Student-Focused Learning Environment

Officials from ASU have shared that the National Institute of Technology will be focused on delivering an education that centers on the student experience. The curriculum will help students gain the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to succeed in today’s global job market. The institute aims to produce graduates who can compete not just locally but anywhere in the world.

Dual Degrees and Global Opportunities

One of the most exciting aspects of the ASU-NIT partnership is the dual degree program. Students will be able to earn degrees from both NIT and Arizona State University, giving them an edge in their careers.

Additionally, students will have the option to study abroad at ASU campuses in the United States, including locations in Washington D.C. and California. They can also participate in exchange programs through ASU’s global network of over 30 partner universities, thanks to the ASU-Cintana Alliance.

Praise from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, after meeting with ASU representatives on July 24, described the partnership as a major milestone for the country’s education sector.

He stated, “NIT will be a world-class institution that empowers our youth to thrive in global markets.” The Prime Minister also assured that the government is fully committed to promoting modern, career-focused education for the younger generation.

What This Means for Pakistan

The launch of the National Institute of Technology in Lahore is expected to:

  • Open new academic opportunities for Pakistani students
  • Create local and international employment prospects
  • Improve Pakistan’s reputation in the global education community

This partnership with Arizona State University is a bold and promising step toward modernizing education in Pakistan and preparing its youth for a competitive global future.
