Nationwide Rain Alert: NDMA Warns of Floods and Landslides This Week

Which Cities in Pakistan Will See the Heaviest Rains?

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a countrywide weather alert warning about heavy rains and possible flooding from July 12 to July 17. People living in different parts of the country are advised to stay alert and take safety precautions during this time.

Heavy Rain Expected in Punjab

According to the NDMA, many districts in Punjab will likely face intense rainfall during this period. The districts expected to be most affected include:

  • Jhelum, Chakwal, Sargodha
  • Lahore, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Gujrat
  • Faisalabad and Narowal

In southern Punjab, areas like DG Khan, Rajanpur, and Rahim Yar Khan could experience an increase in water flow in hilly streams. The runoff water coming from the Pīr Panjal mountain range might cause flash floods, especially in the northeastern areas of Punjab.

People in these areas should stay away from streams and avoid unnecessary travel.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Faces High Flood Risk

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), several districts are also expected to receive very heavy rainfall, which could result in dangerous flash flooding. The NDMA has named the following areas at risk:

  • Dir, Swat, Mansehra, Kohistan
  • Nowshera, Peshawar, Mardan, Buner
  • Waziristan

Major rivers such as the Kabul, Swat, Panjkora, and Kulpani streams may rise sharply, increasing the risk of flooding. In Nowshera, the Kabul River may reach dangerous flood levels.

Balochistan’s Mountain Streams May Overflow

In Balochistan, local streams in many areas are also expected to overflow due to heavy rains. These include:

  • Ziarat, Quetta, Mastung, Kalat
  • Khuzdar, Loralai, Musakhel, and Dera Bugti

People in these regions are advised to remain alert, especially near rivers, streams, and bridges.

Risk of Landslides and Urban Flooding

The NDMA has warned of landslides in hilly and mountainous areas, especially where the soil is already saturated due to earlier rain. At the same time, urban flooding may affect low-lying cities due to water not draining quickly during continuous rain.

The public is being advised to:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel
  • Stay away from rivers, canals, and hills
  • Keep emergency supplies ready at home
  • Follow alerts issued by local authorities

NDMA’s Preparedness and Instructions

To manage the situation effectively, NDMA has directed:

  • All local administrations to be fully alert and active
  • Heavy machinery and equipment should be on standby to quickly clear blocked roads or landslide debris
  • Rescue teams and disaster response units should stay ready for quick action

In case of emergency, people are urged to contact local rescue teams or use the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert App for real-time information, safety updates, and alerts.

Second Weather Alert in 24 Hours

Due to the worsening weather pattern, the NDMA issued a second alert within the same day. This warning focuses on Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), where landslides are expected due to non-stop heavy rain.

The areas most at risk include:

  • In Gilgit-Baltistan: Gilgit, Skardu, Hunza, Astore, Diamer, Ghanche, Shigar
  • In Azad Kashmir: Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, Rawalakot, Haveli, Bagh

Landslide-Prone Areas Identified

NDMA has shared that upper Kohistan, Diamer, and Astore are particularly vulnerable to landslides and falling debris. Roads in these regions may get blocked or damaged.

Additional roads at high risk include:

  • Gilgit-Nagar road
  • Several points on the Karakoram Highway
  • Jaglot-Skardu road, especially near Rondo and nearby areas

The NDMA has again reminded all relevant departments to ensure earth-moving equipment and rescue vehicles are in place to respond quickly and clear the roads when needed.

Final Advice for the Public

People across Pakistan are strongly advised to:

  • Stay updated with the latest weather information
  • Avoid travel in affected areas
  • Keep emergency contacts saved
  • Follow instructions issued by NDMA and local authorities

These preventive steps can help reduce damage and save lives during this critical period of expected rainfall and flooding.
