UAE Announces Public Holiday on June 27 for Islamic New Year

The United Arab Emirates has officially announced a public holiday on Friday, June 27, to observe the Hijri New Year. This special day marks the beginning of the Islamic lunar calendar.

The announcement was made by the Federal Authority for Government Human Resources, stating that all government employees will get the day off. It is expected that a similar announcement will also be made soon by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation for workers in the private sector, so everyone can prepare accordingly.

What Is the Hijri New Year?

The Hijri New Year, also called the Islamic New Year, is a significant day in Islam. It marks the start of the Islamic lunar calendar, which begins with Muharram, the first month.

This day also reminds Muslims of the migration (Hijrah) of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) from Mecca to Medina in the year 622 CE. This important journey was the beginning of a new chapter for the Muslim community.

Unlike Eid Al Fitr or Eid Al Adha, the Islamic New Year is not celebrated with big gatherings or parties. Instead, it is a day for quiet reflection and prayer. Even though it’s not a festive holiday, it is still recognized as a public holiday in the UAE to honor its religious and historical importance.

Next Religious Holiday in 2025

The next important religious occasion after the Hijri New Year will be Mawlid Al Nabawi, which marks the birth of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

This day is expected to fall on Thursday, September 4, 2025. However, the final date will be confirmed based on the sighting of the moon, which is the usual practice for all Islamic events.

Expected Islamic Holidays in 2026

Looking ahead to 2026, several important Islamic events are expected during the cooler months in the UAE. These dates may help residents plan vacations or family time in advance:

  • Ramadan 2026: Expected to begin on Wednesday, February 18, depending on moon sightings.
  • Eid Al Fitr 2026: Likely to fall on Friday, March 20, which may give people a long weekend to enjoy.
  • Eid Al Adha 2026: Predicted to be observed on Tuesday, May 26, after the expected sighting of the Dhul Hijjah crescent moon on May 17.

Just like every year, these dates are tentative and will be confirmed by religious authorities once the moon is sighted.
