25-Year-Old Shubman Gill Creates History in England with Bat

Shubman Gill Creates History in England with Bat

Indian cricket fans had a proud moment on Thursday as Shubman Gill made history at Edgbaston during the second Test against England. The young Indian skipper stunned everyone with a sensational double century, rewriting the record books with his bat.

Gill broke a long-standing record held by former Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin. Azharuddin had scored 179 runs in Manchester back in 1990, which was the highest individual score by an Indian captain on English soil for the past 35 years. But on Thursday, Shubman Gill went past that milestone with class and confidence.

He reached 180 runs in the 115th over of the innings. It was a simple shot — a gentle tap towards point off England’s pacer Josh Tongue — but it made a big statement. That single run pushed Gill ahead of Azharuddin’s record and added another proud chapter to Indian cricket history.

But Gill didn’t stop there. He continued to bat with great focus and calmness. Eventually, he reached a magnificent double century — becoming only the third Indian to score 200 or more runs in a Test match innings against England. The other two Indian legends in this elite list are Sunil Gavaskar and Rahul Dravid.

Highest Individual Scores by Indian Captains in England:

  • Shubman Gill – 200* (Birmingham, 2025)
  • Mohammad Azharuddin – 179 (Manchester, 1990)
  • Virat Kohli – 149 (Birmingham, 2018)

At just 25 years old, Gill has already achieved something remarkable. He is now the first Indian captain to score more than 300 runs in a single overseas Test match. This includes his performance across both innings, showing his consistency and leadership skills.

Gill also became only the third Indian Test captain to score 50 or more runs in multiple innings before the age of 26 — a rare achievement that was previously reached by Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and the legendary Sachin Tendulkar.

India in a Strong Position

At the time this article was written, India were in a strong position on the second day of the Test match. The team had scored 472 runs for the loss of 6 wickets, and Gill remained unbeaten on 200 from 311 balls — a true captain’s knock.

Earlier in the day, India resumed their innings from 310-5. Shubman Gill was joined by all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, and together, the duo stitched a brilliant 203-run partnership for the sixth wicket. Jadeja played a solid supporting role and scored 89 runs off 137 deliveries, which included 10 boundaries and one six. He was eventually dismissed, but by then, the damage had been done to England’s bowling plans.

England Struggles After Winning Toss

England had won the toss and chose to bowl first, hoping to take early advantage of the pitch conditions. However, things didn’t go according to plan. Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal gave a flying start to the innings with a fluent 87, while Shubman Gill held the fort from the other end. Their fine performances on day one laid a strong foundation for the team.

Despite trying different strategies, England’s bowlers found it difficult to break through India’s batting order. The pitch offered little help, and the Indian batters took full control of the game.
